He graduated from Fieldale High School in 1959 where, from the beginning, he had stood out as a really talented musician. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in Music Composition from UNC-G, and he did graduate studies in music composition and orchestration at Boston University. He composed symphonies, band works, musicals, and popular music media. He served as Band Director at Bassett High School, John Marshall High School, Northern Nash High School, George Wythe High School for the Arts and All Souls Presbyterian Church. He was choir director at Fieldale Baptist Church, a pianist for bands, clubs, and country clubs such as the Burt Massengale Orchestra and the Woody Pittman Orchestra. At the time of his death on January 23, 2005 he was head of the music department at George Wythe High School for the Arts in Richmond, VA. He was interred at Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Goochland County, VA and is survived by his wife Lannie Beasley Martin.
