Wood Thrush Along the Leatherwood
You may never see this bird, the Wood Thrush, but if you spend any time outside you may hear it. Its beautiful song goes on an on ... climbing trill by trill to as high a note as the bird can manage and then cascading back down. Along Leatherwood Creek in Henry County the bird comes alive in early May and then sings all summer. Patrick Henry moved his wife, Dorothea Dandridge, and family to Henry County in 1779. He called his home Leatherwood Plantation - 10,000 acres near Leatherwood Creek. The Henrys spent 7 years at Leatherwood and 3 of their children were born there ... Sally, Kitty, and Patrick Jr. And each spring the Wood Thrush sang for their enjoyment.
