A Tragedy
On April 27, 1911 a house fire in Roanoke, Va. killed a widowed mother, Lucy Jane Stone Nunn, and eight of her children. The bodies were brought to Henry County and buried in the Nunn Cemetery on Foxfire Road in the Dyer's Store community. Seven of the children were buried side by side in one grave. The mother and the youngest child were buried side by side adjacent to the father Joseph Henry Nunn who had died in 1910. According to newspaper articles in the Bassett Historical Center archives, several hundred people attended the services and a special train was provided to transport mourners from Roanoke.
