![]() Factory Man by Beth Macy |
The book Factory Man expands on a story Beth wrote in 2012 as part of the "Picking Up the Pieces" series for the Roanoke Times. Her book follows the lives of local textile workers in Galax, VA who lost their mom-and-pop jobs as the result of globalization. She writes about a town that would have been crushed entirely if it weren't for the struggles of John D. Bassett III and other hard-working locals. Check her fan page on Facebook for details. Macy has written for The Roanoke Times since 1989, has won many national and state awards, and served as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
Reader Comment: I remember reading "Picking Up The Pieces". I thought Macy was an incredible writer. My son said "Why don't you interview her then?" And then much later I was taking pictures at the Bassett Historical Center to use on their website. There was only one customer there bent over a bunch of papers and I kept tiptoeing around her until Pat Ross walked in and said "I'd like you to meet Beth Macy". Wowza! |
