Area War Casualties : Memorial Boulevard : Martinsville, Henry & Patrick Counties, VA
Memorial Boulevard in Martinsville, VA is a very busy street. There is a special monument there although it is obscured by trees and speed. On October 16, 1954 the street was new and special. That Saturday there was a dedication ceremony with an address by Governor Thomas B. Stanley. A large crowd and local officials along with the State Highway Commissioner, James A. Anderson, were in attendance. The Boulevard would be a memorial to World War II soldiers who were killed. A plaque in their memory was unveiled by Mrs. Ryland Compton, pictured in the center below, whose husband was killed in the battle of Coral Sea. The plaque was donated by Pannill Post 42 of the American Legion.
