course you say - "Moravian Cookies!" You're on the right
track but there's more. Moravians trace their religious roots back
to the Unity of Brethren, one of the earliest Protestant groups. The Unity
was formed in Bohemia - now the Czech Republic - in 1457. They spread throughout
Bohemia and neighboring Moravia until the counter-Reformation and the Thirty
Years War (1618-1648) nearly destroyed the church. The members went into
hiding or exile until the church was revived in Germany in the early 1700s.
Moravians soon began forming congregations in other countries. Their first
American congregation was in Savannah, Georgia, in 1734. The Savannah project
failed but another group of Brethren founded a colony at Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
in 1740. That settlement flourished. North
